Successful Australian scientists Treat Aggressive Brain Cancer

The higher the stage, the hope for a cure of cancer is usually very small , especially if the cancer is aggressive . But recently a group of scientists from Australia claim to cure aggressive brain cancer patients .

With what they cure it ? Helen was first diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer called Glioblastoma Multiforme or GBM in 2011 . 's Wife of Peter Easton was immediately told by doctors that his life would not be more than six months .

According to Peter , after which she underwent surgery twice and asked to start a trial of immunotherapy .

" He underwent his first surgery two days after diagnosis and after the second surgery but the cancer returned again in the next 12 months . Both Postoperatively , he was offered to participate in the T - cell program and since then the cancer never returned and Helen began to live a normal life . Although not as active as before , but he was still able to cook and do other things , " the story of Peter .

It turns out that Helen is involved in a clinical trial conducted by a team of researchers from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane . Experiment in which researchers take advantage of white blood cells to treat a patient's chronic illness lasted for four years .

" This is the first trial in the world , especially targeting the most malignant brain cancer is . So we train the white blood cells of patients in order to fight the disease , " said lead researcher Professor Rajiv Khanna .

Prof. Khanna explains the white blood cells actually works against infections and cancer are lodged in a person's body . But in the case of glioblastoma , immune cells in the patient's body just does not react to antigens of the cancer .

" Because there are cancer cells in the patient's own body , the white blood cells did not feel she needs to react because it is not something foreign , it is my own body's reaction . , But they do not realize , it actually is a cancer that will kill the cell - other cells . For that we have to do is make the immune cells were aware that cancer cells are much more dangerous than their expectations. 's what we do in the lab , " said Prof. Khanna was quoted as saying by ABC Australia , Sunday ( 11 / 5/2014 ) .

The results are quite promising because Prof. Khanna revealed four of 10 patients who took part in this clinical trial be free of cancer .

Even Prof Khanna says immunotherapy will become the leading method of treatment in cancer patients . " Because you are using is the patient 's own immune cells , so you will not experience side effects when compared with traditional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy . Much safer and more specifically dealing with patients , " he said .
