After spending most of the free practice sessions on Friday ( 05/09/2014 ) , Vettel could be competitive in the third free practice session a day later . However, he then suffered a problem in early Q3 in the qualifying session at the Catalunya circuit on Saturday ( 05/10/2014 ) .
At first , Vettel only lost second gear and try to pass the qualification . But his problems worsened until finally he had to stop .
Red Bull then confirm that the gearbox on Vettel's car had to be replaced . Thus , Vettel had to accept the penalty of five grid . The German rider will start the race on Sunday ( 11/05/2014 ) from the 15th position after the qualifying session recorded in the 10th best time .
" I left the pit for Q3 and lost driving in second gear ; i still have third gear and so on so we thought we could finish the lap with it , " Vettel said after the qualifying session at the official website of Formula 1 .
" But up at the first corner , I lost all the gears , so we could not continue , " said the Red Bull driver .
" I'm getting into the rhythm in every lap after the missed session the previous day . We were close enough to the Mercedes and I thought I could try for the third free practice session , but we did not get that far . I'm certainly disappointed , " he added .
